Our verdict on LiteDB

LiteDB is a lightweight, serverless NoSQL document database for .NET applications. It is designed for desktop and local applications, application file formats, web applications, mobile apps, and per-user data stores. The database stores BSON documents in a single data file and is distributed as open-source software through NuGet or as a DLL. Its strongest fit is an application that needs local document storage without operating a separate database server.

The feature set covers core embedded database needs. LiteDB supports POCO-to-BSON object mapping, LINQ queries, SQL-like commands, document-field and expression indexes, and cross-collection references through DbRef. It also supports ACID and cross-collection transactions, file and stream storage, and write-ahead-log recovery after a write failure. Documents can be up to 16 MB after serialization, giving the product a defined boundary for BSON document size. These capabilities make it suitable for structured local data and embedded application storage rather than a broad database ecosystem.

LiteDB is free and open source, with self-hosted deployment and no managed cloud tier. Its single-DLL model keeps the deployment footprint focused, while the platform listing includes Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android. The main trade-off is scope: the product is centered on embedded .NET use and has no verified integrations documented. Vector search is identified as a v6.0 prerelease feature, while the stable website documentation centers on v5. Choose LiteDB for compact, application-embedded BSON storage and choose another database when managed cloud operations or a wider integration ecosystem is a priority.
