  • Where it wins

    • Transparent workload offloading through virtual nodes
    • Cross-cluster pod-to-pod and pod-to-service connectivity
    • WireGuard tunnels with storage federation for stateful workloads
  • Where it doesn't

    • Focused on multi-cluster scenarios rather than broad core CNI policy
    • Requires Kubernetes-based infrastructure across participating clusters
    • Advanced networking depends on configuring peering and offloading resources

Our verdict on Liqo

Liqo is an open-source Kubernetes platform for creating dynamic multi-cluster topologies across on-premises, cloud, edge, and heterogeneous infrastructure. It is designed for teams that need clusters to cooperate rather than operate as isolated environments, especially when workloads may move to remote cluster resources. Liqo establishes peering relationships, represents remote resources through virtual nodes, and supports transparent workload offloading. It also connects pods and services across clusters while supporting Kubernetes, Kubeadm, K3s, K0s, AKS, EKS, GKE, Aruba Cloud KaaS, and OpenShift.

Its strongest area is cross-cluster connectivity and workload placement. Liqo provides pod-to-pod and pod-to-service connectivity, namespace offloading, resource reflection, and declarative configuration through Kubernetes resources. Its network fabric can connect clusters using different CNI plugins, with WireGuard-based VPN tunnels for encrypted inter-cluster traffic and Geneve-based overlay networking inside clusters. These capabilities make it a fit for distributed Kubernetes environments where applications need access to services or capacity in another cluster without changing their operating model.

Liqo also extends beyond stateless workload movement through a cross-cluster storage fabric for stateful workloads. That broadens its use for environments coordinating compute and storage across clusters, although its positioning remains narrower than a general-purpose container networking platform centered on core CNI policy and networking breadth. Teams seeking multi-cluster peering, remote resource access, and workload offloading should consider Liqo. Teams primarily looking for broad single-cluster networking policy and CNI capabilities should look elsewhere.
