Our verdict on lintree

lintree is a free, open-source command-line disk-usage analyzer for Linux, macOS, and Windows. It scans a selected filesystem path and presents storage usage as an interactive squarified treemap in the terminal. Proportional colored blocks represent files and folders, while directory navigation, a file and folder information sidebar, and keyboard and mouse controls support inspection. It is suited to cross-platform users who want a focused way to understand where storage is being used without a paid plan.

Its strongest area is visual exploration. File-type coloring helps distinguish content categories at a glance, and interactive directory drill-down lets users move from a broad filesystem view into specific folders. Path and name exclusion patterns can narrow the scan, while concurrent filesystem scanning and a fast scan mode with additional workers are designed for large directory trees. The project is distributed as binaries, through an installation script, or from source, giving technically oriented users several installation paths. The MIT License also fits users who prefer open-source software.

lintree is narrower than a full disk-maintenance suite. Its published positioning centers on visualization and inspection rather than verified reporting, integrations, or advanced cleanup, and its file-type treatment is primarily a color-coded view rather than a deeper breakdown. The command-line presentation may also be less suitable for users who expect a conventional graphical application. Choose lintree for fast, interactive treemap analysis across Windows, macOS, and Linux; choose another tool if reporting workflows, connected services, automated cleanup, or more detailed file-type analysis are central requirements.
