Our verdict on Lighthouse

Lighthouse is an open-source GraphQL framework for developers building APIs in PHP-based Laravel or Lumen applications. It is installed as a Composer package and uses Laravel concepts alongside Eloquent models. Teams define schemas with GraphQL Schema Definition Language, expose a GraphQL endpoint, and add server-side behavior through directives. The product is particularly suited to Laravel teams that want GraphQL capabilities within an established PHP application rather than a platform covering many languages or deployment environments.

Its strongest area is the combination of schema authoring and Laravel-aware API behavior. Directives cover authentication, validation, pagination, filtering, relationships, and mutations, while custom directive implementation supports application-specific behavior. Laravel and Laravel Eloquent integration provide a clear ecosystem fit for teams already working with those technologies. Lighthouse also includes PHPUnit helpers for GraphQL queries and mutations, multipart file upload testing, schema introspection testing, and subscription testing. This testing scope gives PHP teams dedicated tools for checking several parts of a GraphQL API without moving away from their existing testing framework.

Lighthouse is free and open source, distributed as an MIT-licensed Composer library. Its self-hosted model gives teams control over how the API runs, but it also means deployment and operational responsibilities remain with the team. The product’s focus is deliberately narrow: PHP, Laravel, Lumen, and related ecosystem tooling. It should appeal to teams that value Laravel integration, directive-based schema behavior, and PHPUnit support. Teams seeking a broader multi-language GraphQL platform or a built-in API exploration interface should consider a different tool or add the separate GraphiQL package.
