libguestfs review
A capable open-source toolkit for technical VM-image management, not a consumer drive utility.

libguestfs is an open-source library and toolset for accessing, inspecting, modifying, and mounting virtual machine disk images. It is aimed at Linux and virtualization administrators, developers, and automation workflows rather than general desktop users. The toolkit works with local, remote, and removable-media images and supports raw, qcow2, vmdk, vdi, vpc, and vhd formats. Its scope covers virtual disks used across multiple virtualization platforms, with APIs and language bindings for application development.
The feature set is broad for image administration. Users can inspect partitions, filesystems, logical volumes, and operating systems; read and write supported image formats; and mount guest filesystems on the host through FUSE. Guestfish provides an interactive shell, while a rescue shell supports recovery-oriented workflows. Image operations include resizing, sparsifying, formatting, cloning, and conversion. Remote storage access includes SSH, HTTP, FTP, iSCSI, NBD, Ceph, and Gluster, giving automation workflows several ways to reach image data. C, C++, and multiple language bindings extend the toolkit beyond command-line use.
libguestfs is a strong choice when virtual-machine image handling, scripting, inspection, or conversion matters more than a polished desktop interface. Its open-source model and free availability suit developers and administrators who need a technical toolkit across Linux, macOS, Windows-related tooling, and API-based workflows. It is less suitable for someone seeking a simple virtual-drive application with persistent drive-letter mounting or optical-disc burning. Choose it for programmable image operations and virtualization administration; choose another category of tool for everyday consumer-style drive access.
