Our verdict on Legal Information Institute

Legal Information Institute (LII) is a free, web-based legal information project from Cornell Law School. It serves lawyers, students, researchers, and members of the general public who need online access to U.S. primary-law materials and supporting reference content. The service covers federal law, state-law resources, selected world-law materials, legal commentary, citation resources, and Supreme Court notifications without requiring a paid plan.

LII’s pricing model is straightforward: access is free, with no paid tiers described. Its collections include the U.S. Constitution, U.S. Code, Code of Federal Regulations, federal rules, executive orders, legislative materials, searchable Supreme Court decisions, and state statutes and regulations. Wex adds a searchable legal dictionary and encyclopedia, while the citation finder bookmarklet and related citation resources support source identification. Supreme Court Bulletin case previews and decision notifications add a focused monitoring option for users following the Court.

The main tradeoff is scope. LII provides broad public access to core U.S. legal materials, but it does not offer docket search and has less advanced research breadth than paid databases. Its Court of Appeals offering is a searchable index of selected decisions rather than a comprehensive research environment. Choose LII for free access to foundational federal and state-law resources, introductory legal research, citation help, and Supreme Court updates. Organizations that need extensive case-law coverage, docket research, or deeper paid-database functionality should choose a more specialized alternative.
