Our verdict on Westlaw
Westlaw is Thomson Reuters’ online legal research platform for attorneys, law firms, government agencies, courts, and other legal professionals. It combines searchable state and federal case law with statutes, regulations, court rules, administrative materials, treatises, law reviews, journals, briefs, pleadings, motions, memoranda, and dockets. Attorney-edited headnotes, Notes of Decisions, annotations, indexes, KeyCite citation validation, and KeyCite Alerts support both initial research and ongoing authority monitoring. Its coverage and feature set suit teams that need a central research system for complex U.S. legal work.
The product line spans several configurations. Westlaw Advantage includes Agentic AI research, Deep Research, Litigation Document Analyzer, Claims Explorer, Litigation Analytics, and KeyCite. Westlaw Advantage with CoCounsel Essentials adds legal research and drafting, Microsoft Word integration, and Westlaw and Practical Law content. Westlaw Edge focuses on intelligent search, document analysis, litigation analytics, and KeyCite Overruling Risk, while Westlaw Edge with AI-Assisted Research adds plain-language legal questions and AI Jurisdictional Surveys. According to the vendor’s pricing model, customers contact sales, with pricing varying by plan and customer configuration. Buyers should compare the included research, drafting, analytics, and AI capabilities against their team’s workflow before selecting a tier.
Westlaw’s main strength is breadth: it brings primary law, commentary, litigation materials, citation tools, docket coverage, alerts, and analytics into a single web platform. Deep Research and document analysis extend the system beyond conventional search, while litigation analytics covers judges, courts, attorneys, law firms, damages, and case types. That breadth is valuable for full-service practices and organizations managing varied matters. Smaller teams with narrow research needs, or organizations working primarily outside U.S. federal and state jurisdictions, may prefer a more focused alternative. Westlaw is the stronger fit when research depth, authority validation, and litigation context matter across a wide range of cases.
