Our verdict on LCFG
LCFG is an open-source, agent-based configuration management system from the University of Edinburgh. It is designed for large sites managing workstation, server, and other Unix nodes with diverse and frequently changing configurations. Administrators store configuration resources centrally, compile machine-specific XML profiles, and distribute changes to client machines. The system is a strong fit for legacy Linux or Unix estates that need centralized reconfiguration, package synchronization, patch updating, and automated installation.
The published pricing model is straightforward: the Open source plan is freely available under the GPL. LCFG is self-hosted, so its deployment model suits organizations that want to operate the configuration system within their own environment. Its feature set covers centralized declarative resources, policy-as-code, drift detection, client-side automatic reconfiguration, modular components for subsystems and services, installed-package synchronization, and software and system patch updating. Network boot or PXE support also enables automated node installation, extending the system beyond post-install configuration.
Platform fit is the main decision point. The documented support includes Fedora Core 3, 5, and 6, Scientific Linux 5, Solaris, experimental Mac OS X, and a demonstration Windows client. That makes LCFG most appropriate for estates aligned with its Unix focus and historical platform documentation, rather than teams seeking broad current-platform coverage. Choose it when centralized profiles, diverse node configuration, and long-established operational patterns matter more than a modern cross-platform support matrix. An alternative is more suitable for organizations that require validated contemporary Linux distributions, production-grade Mac or Windows support, or a broader platform ecosystem.
