Our verdict on Laravel Reverb

Laravel Reverb provides real-time WebSocket communication between Laravel backends and client applications. It is aimed at teams building Laravel applications that need server-to-client updates and want to run the WebSocket server themselves. Reverb is open source, uses the Pusher protocol for subscriptions, channels, and messages, and can be managed as an Artisan server. It also supports deployment through Laravel Cloud as managed Reverb.

Its strongest fit is the Laravel ecosystem. Laravel Broadcasting and Laravel Echo connect application events with clients, while Pusher protocol compatibility supports subscriptions, channels, and messages. Reverb can serve multiple applications from one installation, and Redis pub/sub enables horizontal scaling across servers. JavaScript client support includes Laravel Echo and pusher-js. These pieces make Reverb a natural option for Laravel projects already using those conventions; teams looking for a WebSocket service centered on another framework or a broader ecosystem may find its focus limiting.

The operational controls cover TLS/SSL WebSocket connections, Laravel Pulse monitoring for connections and messages, and Artisan commands to start, debug, restart, and configure the server. The software itself is open source with no published product pricing; managed Reverb through Laravel Cloud is priced separately. Documentation is the listed support channel. Choose Reverb when Laravel integration and control over a self-hosted server matter, particularly if Redis scaling and Pulse monitoring suit the deployment. Consider an alternative if the project needs a framework-neutral service or a support channel beyond documentation.
