Our verdict on Ladybird
Ladybird is an independent, open-source browser and browser engine developed from scratch around web standards. It is aimed at early adopters, especially developers interested in a new browser engine and willing to work with software still in pre-alpha. The project targets Linux and macOS for its first alpha, with a 2026 release target. Its approach may appeal to people who want to follow a standards-focused alternative, but it is not positioned as a mature everyday replacement for established browsers.
The feature set includes multi-process architecture with sandboxed renderer processes, configurable content blocking based on Adblock Plus/EasyList-style filter lists, private browsing windows, and profiles for settings, bookmarks, history, cookies, and site storage. Developer tools include JavaScript debugging; downloads can be paused and resumed, and session restore is available. WebAssembly just-in-time compilation is also included. These capabilities give the project meaningful browser functionality while its engine and compatibility work continue.
Platform scope and maturity are the clearest trade-offs. Linux and macOS are the current target platforms, while Windows and mobile support are not current priorities; extension support remains under development. Ladybird is free and open-source, and is operated by the Ladybird Browser Initiative, a US 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Choose it if you want to explore an independent engine and can accept pre-alpha limitations. If you need a polished, broadly supported browser or established extension support, a more mature alternative is a better fit.
