Our verdict on KubeDiagrams

KubeDiagrams turns Kubernetes configurations and deployment state into architecture diagrams. It is aimed at people working with Kubernetes who want to visualize manifests, Kustomize output, Helm charts, Helmfile descriptors, or actual cluster state. The project is open source and available as a Python package, container image, kubectl plugin, Nix flake, GitHub Action, JetBrains IDE plugin, and free online service. Its scope is Kubernetes architecture rather than a general view of resources across cloud-provider accounts.

Its input coverage is a central strength: diagrams can map supported Kubernetes built-in and custom resources, and users can configure resource clustering and relationships. Declarative custom configurations provide another way to create diagrams. Outputs include D2, DOT, draw.io, Mermaid, PDF, PNG, and SVG, with the interactive diagram viewer offering a way to inspect the result. Kubernetes, Helm, Helmfile, Kustomize, GitHub Actions, and JetBrains IDEs are part of its stated ecosystem fit. These options suit teams that want diagrams alongside existing Kubernetes configuration and delivery workflows.

KubeDiagrams is a good fit when the goal is to turn Kubernetes inputs into shareable diagrams, including from live cluster state. Its deployment options include cloud and self-hosted use, and its published support channels are community resources and documentation. The trade-off is that diagram updates are manual; it does not provide documented connected-account discovery or automatic refresh. Organizations seeking ongoing visualization across cloud-provider accounts should choose a tool with that broader focus. Teams comfortable regenerating Kubernetes diagrams as configurations change are better aligned with KubeDiagrams.
