Our verdict on Kubean

Kubean is an open-source Kubernetes cluster lifecycle management toolchain based on Kubespray. It runs on an existing Kubernetes cluster and uses Kubernetes custom resources and controllers for installation, uninstallation, upgrades, and scaling. Its audience is teams operating Kubernetes clusters on cloud provider or standard Kubernetes infrastructure, especially where offline workflows, multi-architecture delivery, or declarative operations are important.

There is no commercial tier structure to compare: Kubean is free and open source, with self-hosted and API deployment options. The published capabilities cover cluster provisioning through Cluster and ClusterOperation resources, Kubernetes version upgrades, control-plane and worker-node scaling, and cluster uninstallation. Its ecosystem fit is centered on the Kubernetes API server, Kubernetes CRDs, Helm, and Kubespray. Custom Ansible playbooks and shell actions can be supplied through ConfigMaps, giving teams a way to incorporate operational steps beyond the built-in lifecycle actions.

Kubean’s strongest distinction is its support for air-gapped and offline package workflows alongside AMD64 and ARM64 delivery. Concurrent deployment of multiple clusters also suits operators managing more than one environment. The trade-off is operational ownership: the tool runs inside an existing Kubernetes cluster, and control-plane management is customer-managed. Teams looking for declarative lifecycle control across cloud provider or standard Kubernetes infrastructure should consider Kubean. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a hosted service, a managed control plane, or a platform centered on a broader policy-enforcement scope.
