Our verdict on Kube-router

Kube-router is an open-source Kubernetes networking solution deployed as a DaemonSet or binary on cluster nodes. It is designed for Kubernetes environments that need BGP-based pod networking, Linux routing, NetworkPolicy enforcement, and service proxying in one stack. Its supported ecosystem includes Kubernetes distributions and tools such as kubeadm, kops, k0s, k3s, containerd, and CRI-O, with support for AWS, Azure, on-premises, and bare-metal clusters. Linux and self-hosted deployment are central to its operating model.

The published pricing model is open source, with distribution under the Apache-2.0 license rather than paid plan tiers. Kube-router can use direct routing or an optional IP-in-IP overlay, advertise inter-node routes through BGP, and peer externally for route advertisement. Its service layer uses IPVS/LVS, while NetworkPolicy enforcement relies on iptables and ipset. These integrations make it a fit for teams that already operate Kubernetes and Linux networking components, including deployments that need to replace or complement kube-proxy depending on the enabled components.
