Our verdict on Kratix
Kratix is an open-source platform orchestration framework from Syntasso for platform teams building internal developer platforms on Kubernetes. Its core abstraction is the Promise: a reusable API-backed package of platform capabilities, workflows, policies, and lifecycle automation. Application teams can consume those capabilities through APIs, kubectl, GitOps workflows, or portals such as Backstage. Kratix is aimed at organizations that want to create their own platform services rather than adopt a finished developer portal with a broad catalog experience.
Kratix fits an ecosystem centered on Kubernetes controllers, GitOps, and infrastructure automation. It supports Custom Resource Definitions, destination scheduling, fleet-wide reconciliation, and state stores based on GitOps. Integrations include Backstage, Cortex, Port, Flux, Argo CD, Ansible, Terraform Enterprise, and HCP Terraform. The open-source plan includes the Promise-writing CLI, Go and Python SDKs, platform metrics, an observability endpoint, community Slack support, and a marketplace of Promises. Syntasso Kratix Enterprise adds an operator portal, supported portal integrations, Promise testing, resource health checks, and business-hours support. Syntasso Kratix Agentic adds supported MCP integration alongside several enterprise capabilities.
The product’s breadth is concentrated in platform engineering: provisioning, governance, compliance, security checks, and lifecycle management across Kubernetes and connected infrastructure. That makes it a strong fit for teams standardizing self-service through APIs and controllers, especially when platform capabilities need to be reused across destinations. It is less suitable for organizations primarily seeking an out-of-the-box software catalog or a portal-first experience. Teams choosing Kratix should be prepared to own a self-hosted Kubernetes foundation and define the platform workflows they want to expose. Those requirements favor technically mature platform teams; organizations wanting a ready-made catalog-led portal should consider a more portal-focused alternative.
