Our verdict on Koding

Koding is an open-source development environment platform for teams and organizations that want to provision and share virtual machines in a customer-controlled environment. YAML-based stack definitions describe development environments and infrastructure resources, while browser-based IDE and terminal access support work from the web. Developers can also connect local IDEs through the KD command-line tool or access virtual machines through SSH and sudo. Collaboration features include environment sharing, pair programming, administrator permissions, and stack versioning.

Its pricing model is open source rather than a set of hosted plans. Koding is currently offered only as a self-managed installation, and its hosted service is no longer available. That makes the product a fit for teams that can operate their own deployment and want control over how development environments are provisioned. The platform covers virtual machine and infrastructure provisioning through AWS, DigitalOcean, OpenStack, Vagrant, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Docker, Mesosphere, and Heroku. GitHub repository integration is included, with additional connections for GitLab and Slack.

Koding’s strongest case is breadth for self-hosted teams: it combines customizable YAML configuration, multiple infrastructure providers, browser and local development access, versioning, permissions, and collaborative workflows in one platform. It is less suitable for organizations seeking a managed cloud workspace with a current hosted offering or a vendor-operated service model. The official GitHub repository is archived and read-only, which is an important consideration for teams assessing ongoing platform development. Choose Koding when deployment control and customizable team VMs matter most; consider another product when managed availability and an active development roadmap are higher priorities.
