  • Where it wins

    • Scans code, history, containers, cloud buckets, URLs, and whole systems
    • Decodes concealed credentials and supports baseline-based new-secret detection
    • Integrates with major CI systems and supports pre-commit scanning
  • Where it doesn't

    • Its command-line model may be less suitable for teams seeking a hosted console
    • Live credential verification is optional rather than part of every scan
    • Reports are centered on SARIF and structured JSON-envelope formats

Our verdict on KeyHog

KeyHog is an open-source Rust command-line secret scanner for developers and security teams. It searches source code and Git history for API keys, tokens, passwords, and other credentials, while extending coverage to containers, archives, cloud buckets, browser assets, URLs, collaboration content, and running systems. Its broad scanning surface makes it a fit for teams that need one tool across repositories, infrastructure, and CI workflows rather than a scanner limited to source files.

Coverage depth is a major strength. KeyHog combines service-specific detectors with generic entropy discovery, then decodes base64, hex, URL, protobuf, multiline, and structured configuration content. Suppression, confidence policies, and baseline-based new-secret detection help teams focus on newly introduced findings. Pre-commit scanning and a repository guard daemon support earlier detection, while optional live verification can check credentials through provider endpoints. Execution modes include CPU, SIMD, CUDA, Metal, and WGPU, giving technical teams several ways to run high-volume scans.

KeyHog also fits established delivery pipelines through GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI, Jenkins, and Buildkite. It supports GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket workflows, along with pull-request scanning, custom rules, and CI/CD scanning. SARIF and structured JSON-envelope reports provide machine-readable outputs for downstream processing. The trade-off is its command-line, open-source operating model: teams looking for a hosted console or a fully managed workflow may prefer a different category fit. KeyHog is the stronger choice for teams comfortable operating open-source tooling and needing wide environment coverage; it is less suited to buyers prioritizing a packaged SaaS experience.
