Our verdict on Kerbal Space Program
Kerbal Space Program is a single-player spaceflight simulation for players who want to design spacecraft, pilot them, and guide a crew through launches and exploration. Its scope reaches beyond flight: players can explore moons and planets in the Kerbol system, conduct experiments, manage crew, and dock vessels to build stations and bases. The game is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and its three modes support different approaches to the same space program: Science, Career, and Sandbox.
The modes provide a clear range of structure. Science mode uses experiments to unlock technology, while Career mode adds construction, funding, upgrades, and strategy decisions. Sandbox mode removes that progression constraint by making all parts and technology available. Across them, spacecraft assembly and flight remain central: parts have distinct flight effects, and players pilot ships through maneuvers. This makes the game a fit for players interested in both engineering choices and the consequences of those choices in flight, rather than a space exploration game focused only on discovering new locations.
According to the vendor's description, the official website links to community-made mods, adding a route for players interested in community modifications. Kerbal Space Program is a paid desktop game without a free plan. The Private Division Store is closed, while Steam lists the game for sale; its price varies by region and may be promotional. Choose it if spacecraft construction, crew and resource management, and career progression are the draw. Players looking for a free game or a different genre should look elsewhere.
