Our verdict on Karmada
Karmada is an open-source Kubernetes management and orchestration system for teams running applications across multiple Kubernetes clusters and clouds. Its Kubernetes-compatible API centralizes resource management, workload propagation, scheduling, failover, migration, and application upgrades. It fits hybrid-cloud, multi-cloud, on-premises, edge, and self-built environments, with push and pull modes for connecting member clusters. The strongest use case is policy-based placement of applications across a Kubernetes fleet rather than management of a single cluster.
Karmada’s policy layer is its defining capability. Policies can propagate workloads, schedule them across clusters, and apply cluster-specific configuration through overrides. The platform also provides unified resource management, global resource search, cross-cluster service discovery, and cross-cluster rolling application upgrades. Failover and workload migration support helps coordinate applications when cluster placement needs to change. Its ecosystem fit includes the Kubernetes API and kubectl, plus Argo CD, Flux, Submariner, Elasticsearch, and OpenSearch. These connections make Karmada suitable for organizations that already organize delivery, networking, search, or observability around Kubernetes-compatible tooling.
Karmada is operated as customer-managed infrastructure, so teams remain responsible for the control plane and the surrounding operational model.
