Our verdict on Kanary

Kanary is an open-source Kubernetes operator and custom resource definition for automating canary deployments. It is aimed at teams running Kubernetes workloads that want the canary lifecycle managed through Kubernetes resources and controllers. Kanary creates and manages canary workloads, services, traffic routing, validation, and rollout updates. Its scope is deliberately focused on canary delivery rather than a broad collection of rollout strategies or deployment environments.

The rollout flow covers several important stages. Traffic can be routed through services or Istio mirroring, while validation can be manual, label-based, or driven by PromQL queries. Static and HPA-based canary scaling are supported, giving teams two approaches for managing canary capacity. After successful validation, Kanary updates the associated deployment. If validation fails, it removes the canary resources and leaves the original deployment in place, providing automated rollback behavior within the described workflow.

Kanary fits teams that want an open-source, self-hosted controller integrated with Kubernetes and familiar ecosystem components such as Istio, Prometheus, and Helm. The included kubectl plugin can generate KanaryDeployment resources, which supports a resource-driven operating model. Its narrow platform scope is also the main boundary: organizations seeking hosted delivery management, a wider integration catalog, or rollout strategies beyond canary deployments should consider a broader alternative.
