Our verdict on Kamal
Kamal is an MIT-licensed, open-source deployment tool for containerized web applications. It builds Docker images, pushes them to a registry, connects to bare-metal servers, cloud virtual machines, or Ubuntu servers over SSH, and starts application containers. Traffic switches through kamal-proxy after the application passes a GET /up health check. Originally built for Rails applications, Kamal also supports any web application that can be packaged as a Docker container. It suits developers and teams that want to deploy to infrastructure they manage rather than adopt a hosted deployment service.
The main strength is its operational deployment flow. Kamal supports rolling restarts and upgrades across hosts, zero-downtime traffic switching, deployment rollback to previously running images, and asset bridging between application versions. It can also manage accessory services such as MySQL, databases, and caches. Deployment audit logs are recorded on servers, while OpenTelemetry export provides a route for deployment log observability. These capabilities make Kamal a practical fit for teams that value control over server placement and deployment behavior.
Kamal is intentionally focused rather than broad. Its documented ecosystem centers on Docker, Docker Registry, SSH, kamal-proxy, and OpenTelemetry, with self-hosted operation across macOS, Linux, and servers. The published model is free open-source software distributed as a tool rather than a hosted subscription product, so teams take responsibility for infrastructure, configuration, and ongoing operations. Choose Kamal when Docker, SSH-based provisioning, rolling releases, and rollback are central requirements. Consider another deployment platform if extensive integrations, centralized governance, or a managed operating model matter more than direct control of servers.
