Our verdict on Kamaji

Kamaji is an open-source Kubernetes operator from Clastix for organizations that need to host multiple independent tenant clusters on shared infrastructure. It runs tenant control planes as pods inside a management cluster, while worker nodes can operate across cloud, on-premises, edge, bare-metal, and virtual-machine environments. Platform engineering teams, managed Kubernetes providers, and operators building multi-tenant services are the clearest fit. Its TenantControlPlane custom resource provides declarative lifecycle management for provisioning, reconciliation, repair, deletion, upgrades, and certificate rotation.

Kamaji is available under the Apache 2.0 license, and its Free plan includes hosted Kubernetes control planes as pods, TenantControlPlane lifecycle management, Cluster API support, and compatibility with Terraform and GitOps workflows. The ecosystem also includes integrations with Ansible, Flux, and Argo CD. Its control-plane approach uses upstream Kubernetes components with kubeadm-based setup and supports consolidated datastores including etcd, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and NATS. Blue/Green and rolling upgrade strategies add options for managing tenant control-plane changes.

The trade-off is operational ownership: Kamaji is self-hosted and customer-managed, so teams remain responsible for the management cluster and surrounding platform operations. It is also a focused tool rather than a general-purpose Kubernetes management suite; its central value is hosting and operating tenant control planes. Teams that need declarative multi-cluster tenancy, broad worker connectivity, and integration with existing infrastructure automation should consider Kamaji. Organizations primarily seeking a wider policy-management layer or a fully managed control-plane service should look for an alternative that centers those requirements.
