Our verdict on JuiceFS
JuiceFS is an open-source distributed file system for cloud and hybrid-cloud environments. It separates file data from metadata, storing data in object storage while using databases or managed metadata services for metadata. The result is a storage layer with POSIX-compatible file access, HDFS API compatibility, an S3-compatible gateway, WebDAV access, and shared mounts across hosts. It fits big data, machine learning, AI, backup, shared workspaces, and other large-scale storage workloads.
The Community Edition is self-hosted and deployable on public, private, or hybrid cloud. It includes a metadata engine of choice and local client-side cache. Cloud Service is fully managed and priced at $0.02 per GiB per month, with a managed distributed metadata engine, upgraded caching, and enterprise-level management and security features. Object-storage charges are separate. Enterprise Edition supports on-premises, BYOC, and other deployment options, with unlimited capacity and scalability plus enterprise features and support.
JuiceFS has broad ecosystem coverage for a storage product: Kubernetes CSI provides persistent storage integration, while Apache Spark, Presto, Hive, and Hadoop are listed integrations. Cross-cloud and cross-region replication, distributed client-side and data caching, encryption in transit and at rest, and LZ4 and Zstandard compression extend its fit across hybrid workloads. Choose it when protocol compatibility and deployment flexibility matter more than a narrowly managed service. Teams seeking a fully managed experience can choose Cloud Service; teams choosing Community Edition should be prepared to operate the deployment themselves.
