Our verdict on JStachio

JStachio is an open-source Java template engine for teams that want Mustache templates checked against Java model types during compilation. It compiles templates into readable Java source through annotation processing, and is suited to server-side HTML rendering, code generation, and inline templating. The project supports Mustache v1.3 syntax, including partials, inheritance, layouts, and lambdas, with output escaping for HTML and configurable non-HTML content types. It is a library deployed in your own environment, not a hosted template service.

Its strongest fit is a Java application that benefits from template and model bindings being checked before runtime. JStachio requires Java 17 or later and a build system able to run the Java annotation processor, so it fits established Java build workflows rather than environments that cannot run annotation processing. Integration options include Spring Framework, Micronaut, and Jooby. Output can be written to an Appendable or encoded output streams, giving applications options for consuming rendered content without changing the engine's core role.

The trade-off is a focused, synchronous rendering model. Rendering writes synchronously to an Appendable, and reactive rendering is unsupported; teams that need asynchronous rendering should look for an alternative designed for that model. Likewise, projects seeking a hosted authoring or rendering service, or a template engine beyond Mustache, may find JStachio too narrow. Java teams comfortable with self-hosting and annotation processing should consider it for compile-time binding checks and familiar Mustache capabilities. Teams using other runtimes or requiring reactive rendering should choose a different approach.
