Our verdict on jEnv

jEnv is an open-source command-line environment manager for Java developers working across projects that require different versions. It lets teams register installed JDKs and JREs, then select a Java version globally, for a project directory, or for an individual shell. That makes it a good fit for Java teams using established build tools and working with multiple local Java environments. It does not install Java distributions, so the required JDKs or JREs must already be installed through another source.

Its main strength is project-level version control without tying the workflow to one Java release. jEnv stores a selected project version in a .java-version file that can be checked into Git, while its export plugin can set JAVA_HOME and JDK_HOME. Shell initialization supports Bash, Zsh, and Fish, and jenv doctor helps inspect the setup. Plugins extend the workflow to Gradle, Maven, Ant, Leiningen, and sbt, giving established Java projects a direct path to the selected runtime.

The trade-off is scope. jEnv is focused on selecting and exposing Java installations rather than provisioning them, so teams need a separate installation process for each required JDK or JRE. Its documentation covers macOS and Linux, and it does not provide verified CI support. Choose jEnv when command-line version switching, project pinning, shell integration, and familiar Java build tools are the priority. Consider an alternative when you need Java distribution installation, broader platform coverage, or a documented CI workflow in the same tool.
