Our verdict on JBehave

JBehave is an open-source Java framework for behavior-driven development. It is aimed at development teams that want to write text-based user stories with either JBehave or Gherkin syntax, then connect those stories to executable Java steps. Stories can run through JUnit, Maven, IDEs, or the JBehave Embedder, making the framework suitable for teams that already organize Java testing around those tools. Its self-hosted model also fits organizations that want to keep execution within their own environments.

Execution is one of JBehave's stronger areas. Teams can load stories from classpath resources or URLs, bind steps to Java methods with annotations, localize user stories, and run stories concurrently with configurable threads. Reporting is available in HTML, TXT, XML, and JSON formats. The framework also connects with JUnit, TestNG, Spring Test, Guice, Needle, PicoContainer, Spring, Weld, Groovy, JRuby, Scala, Google Docs, REST, and Selenium. For browser workflows, Selenium-based testing is available through JBehave Web rather than the core story framework.

JBehave is a good fit for Java teams that want open-source BDD execution with flexible story loading, reporting, dependency injection, and concurrency options. It is less suitable for teams seeking a hosted platform, since its platform coverage is self-hosted. The published references also require attention during adoption: the stable core reference identifies version 5.2.0, published in 2023, while the latest reference identifies a 6.0-SNAPSHOT. Teams that prefer a current hosted service or a more unified browser-testing product should consider alternatives.
