Our verdict on Intel gProfiler

Intel gProfiler is an open-source, system-wide continuous profiler for Linux hosts. It is aimed at teams investigating CPU time, memory allocation, hardware performance events, and hardware metrics across applications and kernel routines. Language coverage includes Golang, Java, Python, PHP, .NET, Ruby, and Node.js, making it suitable for mixed-runtime environments rather than a single-language service. It supports x86_64 and AArch64 systems, with incomplete AArch64 support.

The platform fit is focused and self-hosted. gProfiler can write collapsed stack samples and flamegraphs locally, collect hardware performance events, and use PerfSpect for hardware metrics collection. Profiles can also be uploaded to self-hosted Performance Studio for filtering and aggregation. Docker is listed as an integration, while the overall deployment model remains self-hosted and Linux-specific. That makes it a natural fit for infrastructure teams that want control over profiling data and the surrounding environment, but less suitable for organizations seeking a hosted service or broad operating-system coverage.

Its standout capability is the combination of periodic continuous profiling with system-wide sampling across native programs, managed languages, and kernel routines. Hardware counter profiling adds another layer for teams examining performance beyond application stacks. Rootless profiling is available with limited functionality, so the depth of collection may depend on deployment privileges. Choose Intel gProfiler when Linux coverage, open-source access, cross-runtime sampling, and self-hosted analysis are central requirements. Consider an alternative when your environment depends on non-Linux hosts, a hosted operating model, or fuller AArch64 support.
