  • Where it wins

    • Supports Intel and AMD instructions in 16-, 32- and 64-bit modes.
    • Combines decoding, multiple syntax formatters, assembly and re-encoding.
    • Metadata APIs and block encoding support analysis, relocation and patching.
  • Where it doesn't

    • Focused on x86 rather than broader processor architectures.
    • Does not include a decompiler.
    • No firmware-analysis capability or plugin API.

Our verdict on iced-x86

iced-x86 is an MIT-licensed Rust library for decoding, disassembling, assembling and re-encoding x86 instructions. Its intended users are developers building reverse-engineering, binary-analysis, instrumentation or code-generation tools. It covers 16-, 32- and 64-bit modes and supports Intel and AMD instruction sets, making it a focused choice for software where detailed x86 instruction handling is central.

The library combines several stages of instruction work: it can decode and re-encode instructions at arbitrary addresses, assemble instructions, and format disassembly as MASM, NASM, GAS (AT&T) or Intel (XED) syntax. Its metadata API exposes information about registers, memory, flags and control flow. A block encoder supports relocating or patching code. Together, these capabilities suit developers who need instruction-level building blocks rather than a complete reverse-engineering application. Bindings or builds are available for Rust, .NET, Python, JavaScript/WebAssembly, Java and Lua; Python and JavaScript/WebAssembly bindings are specifically listed among its features.

The tradeoff is its deliberately narrow scope. iced-x86 is limited to x86, with no decompiler, firmware-analysis feature or plugin API, so teams seeking broader architecture coverage or a full analysis environment should look elsewhere. The project is open source under the MIT license, with documentation and community support channels. It fits individual developers through enterprise teams that can integrate a library into their own tooling; it is less suitable for buyers who expect a standalone decompiler or a broader reverse-engineering suite.
