Our verdict on IBM Cloud Object Storage
IBM Cloud Object Storage is a managed service for unstructured data, including media, backups, documents and datasets. It organizes data into configurable buckets and offers single-site, regional and cross-region resiliency. The service is suited to IBM Cloud customers building data lakes, AI workloads, cloud-native applications, backup workflows, recovery processes and archives. Access is available through the web and API, with a S3-compatible REST API for application integration.
Pricing is structured around three plans. Lite provides a 30-day trial plan with a 25 GB monthly storage limit. Standard uses pay-as-you-go pricing with no minimum fee, while its Free Tier allowance is limited to 12 months. One Rate uses a flat monthly charge and includes allowances for storage, API operations, retrieval and outbound bandwidth. This gives teams a choice between usage-based billing and a bundled allowance model, but the service is not positioned as a permanent free plan.
Its strongest technical breadth comes from combining large-object support with data management and protection controls. Multipart uploads support objects up to 10 TB, while versioning, lifecycle expiration and archive rules help manage data over time. Immutable retention policies and legal holds address records that need protection from alteration. Automatic replication between buckets, selectable resiliency scopes and IBM Aspera high-speed transfer extend the service for distributed storage and transfer workflows. IBM Cloud IAM, Key Protect, Hyper Protect Crypto Services and Cloud SDKs strengthen its fit within IBM's ecosystem.
