Our verdict on Huawei Cloud OBS

Huawei Cloud OBS is a managed object storage service for application files, backups, archives, videos, surveillance data, and other unstructured content. It is aimed at teams building on Huawei Cloud, as well as organizations that need storage classes, retention controls, encryption, and programmatic access through web, APIs, SDKs, and command-line tools. Standard, Infrequent Access, Archive, and Deep Archive classes support different storage patterns, while multi-AZ and single-AZ options provide a choice of storage redundancy.

The service fits particularly well within the Huawei Cloud ecosystem. Listed integrations include Huawei Cloud CDN, Elastic Cloud Server, MapReduce Service, SFS Turbo, Cloud Container Engine, ModelArts, Software Repository for Container, Media Processing Center, and Elastic Load Balance. OBS also supports S3 compatibility, static website hosting, REST APIs, and access through the Huawei Cloud console. These options make it suitable for application storage, content delivery workflows, analytics, containers, machine learning, and media processing without narrowing the service to one workload.

Data governance features are a notable strength: IAM, policies, and ACLs control bucket and object access; server-side and in-transit encryption protect data; lifecycle rules can transition objects between classes or delete them; and versioning retains historical versions. WORM retention prevents deletion or overwrite during defined retention periods. The main trade-off is that WORM-enabled buckets cannot use cross-region replication, while replication itself is available only between supported regions.
