Our verdict on HTTL

HTTL (Hyper-Text Template Language) is an open-source Java template engine for generating dynamic HTML on self-hosted infrastructure. It is aimed at teams building Java web applications that need an alternative to JSP or another server-side rendering layer. Templates support variables, expressions, conditional directives, loops, and other documented logic-based constructs, making HTTL suitable for pages whose content changes from request to request.

The engine offers two rendering paths: templates can be parsed into an abstract syntax tree and compiled into Java implementation classes, or processed through interpreted conversion. Configurable loaders can read templates from the classpath, files, or strings. Output can be sent through a Writer or OutputStream, while dynamic output filters include XML, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS escaping options. This gives Java teams control over template sourcing, execution mode, and output handling. Documentation also lists integration modules for Spring MVC, Servlet, Struts, Webx, JFinal, and Nutz.

HTTL fits organizations that want an open-source, self-hosted engine centered on server-rendered HTML and Java framework compatibility. Its narrow scope is useful when HTML generation is the main requirement, but teams seeking client-side rendering, multi-language templates, or a broader hosted ecosystem should consider alternatives. The project’s official documentation is dated, and support is documented through its available materials rather than a broader service program. Choose HTTL when Java integration, configurable template processing, and source-level control matter more than a managed deployment experience.
