Our verdict on HPE SimpliVity
HPE SimpliVity brings compute, storage and virtualization capabilities together in HPE server-based hyperconverged systems. It is aimed at organizations running virtualized data-center or edge workloads that want VM operations and data protection within an appliance deployment. The product can suit small, mid-market and enterprise organizations, but its fit depends on the hardware model and software configuration selected.
VM provisioning and lifecycle operations sit alongside backup and restore, built-in data protection and two-node high availability. Selected current configurations support stretch clusters, with synchronous writes between two physical sites. HPE StoreOnce integration is also available on supported configurations. Those options make protection and availability central to the product's appeal, particularly for buyers consolidating infrastructure around virtual machines. Buyers should verify which capabilities apply to their target configuration before comparing it with alternatives.
Current models offer a choice of Broadcom VMware or HPE Morpheus Software—VM Essentials, depending on model and configuration. That makes the platform choice an important part of procurement and ecosystem fit. Hardware configurations and software licensing are quoted rather than sold at standard published online prices, so buyers should plan for a vendor quote to evaluate total cost. SimpliVity is worth considering when an HPE appliance with integrated VM management and protection fits the environment; organizations wanting transparent online pricing or a platform-neutral hardware choice should compare alternatives.
