  • Where it wins

    • Retries use exponential backoff and jitter with configurable limits.
    • Replay, search, inspection, and delivery timelines are built into the dashboard.
    • Verification, circuit breaking, and dead-letter handling cover delivery failures.
  • Where it doesn't

    • Self-hosting puts deployment and ongoing operations on the team.
    • SQLite storage may be limiting for larger or more demanding workloads.
    • Service-specific integrations center on Stripe, GitHub, Twilio, and Shopify.

Our verdict on hookdash

hookdash is an open-source, self-hosted webhook gateway for developers and small teams. It receives events from configurable sources, verifies signatures, queues and forwards payloads to configured endpoints, and provides a web dashboard for managing delivery. Supported verification options include Stripe, GitHub, Twilio, Shopify, and generic HMAC. Teams can deploy it through npm or Docker, with API and self-hosted platform support. It is a strong fit for organizations that want to operate their own webhook layer rather than rely on a hosted service.

Delivery controls are the product’s main strength. Configurable retries use exponential backoff and jitter, while a circuit breaker responds to repeatedly failing endpoints. Events that exceed retry limits move to a dead-letter queue, and one-click replay provides a direct recovery path. The dashboard combines event search, filtering, payload and header inspection, delivery timelines, statistics, endpoint management, and connectivity testing. Server-sent events provide real-time updates, making it practical to monitor incoming activity and delivery status from one interface.

The trade-off is operational ownership. Teams need to deploy and maintain the application, and SQLite is the documented storage layer, which may suit smaller installations better than more demanding environments. The product’s focus is webhook receipt, delivery control, inspection, and recovery rather than a broad integration ecosystem. Choose hookdash if self-hosting, open-source access, and detailed delivery handling matter most. Consider another option if you want a managed hosted service, a larger prebuilt integration catalog, or a different storage model.
