Hitachi Universal Volume Manager review
A focused Hitachi storage virtualization function for block-volume migration across heterogeneous systems.

Hitachi Universal Volume Manager is a licensed storage virtualization function for Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform systems. It maps volumes from external storage systems into a local storage system so connected hosts can access them as local volumes. Its primary audience is enterprise infrastructure teams moving block data between storage systems, consolidating heterogeneous arrays, or maintaining access to external volumes through a Hitachi environment.
Its strongest differentiator is ecosystem breadth. Universal Volume Manager supports Hitachi VSP One Block and VSP One SDS Block, along with systems from HPE, Dell EMC, IBM, Fujitsu, Seagate, Sun, StorageTek, and SGI. Fibre Channel external paths are supported, while iSCSI external paths are supported on VSP One Block 85. Multiple external storage systems and path groups can be managed, giving organizations a way to connect varied block-storage estates within a single storage virtualization function.
Migration and administration are the other major considerations. Migration pairs support data movement between storage systems, while monitoring and checking workflows cover external volumes and migration pairs. Administrators can work through GUI, CLI, CCI, and REST API tools, and the category specifications include batch migration, cutover orchestration, and migration reporting. The trade-off is a narrow scope: this is a block-focused function embedded in Hitachi storage systems, not a standalone SaaS product or a broad file and cloud gateway. Organizations with Hitachi infrastructure and block-volume migration needs should consider it; teams seeking file services, cloud gateway capabilities, or an independent software service should choose an alternative.

- Offers migration pairs, monitoring, and REST API administration
- Where it doesn't
- Focused on block workloads rather than file or cloud gateways
- Delivered as a licensed function in Hitachi storage systems
- iSCSI external paths are supported on VSP One Block 85
