Our verdict on Harmonia
Harmonia is an open-source, self-hosted binary cache server for Nix. It serves Nix store contents over HTTP so other Nix machines can download built artifacts instead of rebuilding them. The product is aimed at teams and individuals operating their own Nix infrastructure, particularly those that need a focused cache service rather than a general-purpose artifact repository. It runs on Linux and is built in Rust.
Its strongest fit is the depth of its Nix-specific serving features. HTTP range support enables NAR file streaming, while build logs and .ls file listings can also be streamed. The /serve endpoint provides package-content serving, and transparent zstd compression can reduce transferred content. Harmonia also includes built-in TLS encryption, Nix binary-cache signing with configured keys, and a Prometheus metrics endpoint. Deployment can use a NixOS module or the project’s Nix flake, giving Nix-oriented operators deployment paths that fit their existing infrastructure.
The trade-off is a narrow product scope. Harmonia is a Nix binary cache, not a multi-format artifact repository, and it does not target the broader repository-management needs associated with access controls, upstream proxying or retention features. That makes it a sensible choice when the central requirement is serving signed Nix build outputs from infrastructure you operate. Teams seeking a wider package ecosystem or repository-management feature set should choose a product designed around those needs instead. For Nix teams that value focused serving, compression, encryption, signing and observability, Harmonia keeps the service closely aligned with the Nix binary-cache workflow.
