Our verdict on GTK

GTK is a free, open-source widget toolkit for developers building desktop graphical applications, from small utilities to full application suites. Its widget set includes buttons, text inputs, and windows, while event-driven handling supports interactive applications. GTK targets Linux and other Unix-like systems, Windows, and macOS. It is a fit for teams comfortable choosing among its language bindings, including C, C++, JavaScript, Python, Rust, and Vala, as well as several others. It is not a general mobile-app development framework, so teams targeting mobile apps should look elsewhere.

The toolkit's desktop scope is supported by layers for window systems and rendering. GDK provides an abstraction for Wayland, X11, Windows, and macOS, while GSK offers OpenGL, Vulkan, and Cairo rendering backends. GtkBuilder markup provides a way to assemble complex interfaces, alongside the widget-based approach. These capabilities give desktop teams options for structuring UI and rendering across supported systems, rather than tying the toolkit to one window-system interface or graphics backend. GTK also publishes an application development API and references for GTK 3 and GTK 4, so version choice is part of evaluating how an existing or new project should be organized.

GTK is open source with a free plan, making it available without a paid tier distinction in the published offering. Its listed support channels are documentation and community, and supported IDEs include Eclipse and GNOME Builder. That profile will suit solo developers through enterprise teams that can rely on those resources and want a cross-platform desktop toolkit. It is less suitable for projects whose priority is mobile deployment, or for teams that require support channels beyond community and documentation. Buyers should choose GTK for desktop UI development across its supported operating systems, not as a single framework for desktop and mobile products.
