Our verdict on GrumPHP

GrumPHP is an open-source PHP Composer plugin for teams that want Git hooks to run quality checks during development. It installs and manages repository hooks, runs configured tests and code-quality tasks, validates commit messages, and exposes commands for direct CLI or CI execution. Solo developers, small teams, mid-market groups and enterprises can use it when PHP projects need shared, YAML-defined commit checks across Windows, macOS and Linux.

The software is free and open source, with self-hosted deployment. Installation can be handled through Composer, a dependency-free PHAR shim or Phive. Projects define tasks and behavior in YAML files, and configuration sharing supports consistent rules across repositories. Composer integration fits projects already using PHP dependency management, while Git integration connects the checks to normal commit workflows. Parallel task execution can reduce waiting when several checks run together, and optional fixers can apply supported corrections. Custom environment files, variables and paths provide control over external tools and project-specific execution contexts.

GrumPHP’s focus is breadth within commit-time quality automation: teams can combine tests, code-quality commands, fixers and commit-message validation, then run the same checks in CI or directly from the command line. The main trade-off is scope. Its workflow is centered on PHP and Composer, so teams seeking a language-neutral hook manager may need another approach. Deployment is self-hosted, and support is organized around documentation and community channels. Choose GrumPHP when a PHP repository needs configurable, shareable Git checks with CI execution; consider alternatives when hosted operation, dedicated support or broader ecosystem coverage matters more than Composer-native configuration.
