Our verdict on GraphiQL

GraphiQL is an open-source, React-based interactive GraphQL IDE for developers working with GraphQL APIs. In the browser, it supports writing and executing queries, mutations, and subscriptions against a configured endpoint. Its strongest fit is for teams and individual developers who need to explore schemas, compose operations, and inspect GraphQL documentation without paying for a proprietary client. GraphiQL can also be embedded in applications through npm packages or delivered through browser-based builds.

GraphQL authoring is the product’s defining strength. Syntax highlighting, field and argument autocomplete, type, query, and variable suggestions, validation, and real-time error reporting support the full query-writing workflow. Automatic leaf-field insertion can speed up work with non-scalar fields, while the schema documentation explorer adds search and Markdown support. Query history and a custom plugin API extend the core experience, giving teams ways to retain useful operations and adapt the interface to their environment.

The published project scope is deliberately narrow: GraphiQL runs on the web and works with GraphQL APIs, including HTTP, multipart, and WebSocket subscription fetching through graphql-ws. It is free and open source, which makes it suitable for developers who value inspectable tooling or want to embed an IDE into an application. Choose GraphiQL when GraphQL schema exploration and browser access are central requirements. Choose a broader API client instead when your workflow spans multiple API styles, requires a desktop application, or calls for a general-purpose client rather than a focused GraphQL IDE.
