Our verdict on Grafana Loki
Grafana Loki is an open-source log aggregation system for application and infrastructure logs. It indexes log metadata such as labels instead of indexing full log text, which keeps its architecture focused on lower index overhead and scalable storage. The product suits engineering teams already working with Grafana, Prometheus, Kubernetes, or Grafana Cloud, especially those that want to run Loki themselves or connect it to existing object storage. An HTTP API supports log ingestion, querying, and streaming, while LogQL provides the primary query language.
Deployment and ecosystem fit are central strengths. Loki supports self-managed deployments and a managed Grafana Cloud Logs service, with integrations for Grafana, Prometheus, Kubernetes, Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, and Azure Blob Storage. Its multi-tenant, horizontally scalable architecture supports larger environments, while the Compactor manages retention policies. Storage can use object storage or local filesystems. Log alerting runs through Grafana, and structured metadata plus query-time field parsing add flexibility when logs need more searchable context without changing the core indexing approach.
Pricing depends on the deployment model. Self-managed Grafana Loki is open source, while Grafana Cloud Logs Free includes 50 GB ingested per month, 14-day retention, and community support at no monthly charge. Grafana Cloud Logs Pro costs $19 per month and includes 50 GB ingested per month before usage-based billing; it adds 30-day retention, with separate usage charges for processing, writing, and retention. Loki is a strong fit for open-source teams that value Grafana integration and deployment control. Teams wanting a fully managed experience with simpler, predictable billing or a less label-oriented model may prefer an alternative.
