Our verdict on Gradle

Gradle is an open-source build automation tool for software projects, with support for Java, Android, Kotlin Multiplatform, Groovy, Scala, JavaScript, C, C++, and Swift. It is particularly well suited to JVM teams and projects with multiple modules or dependency-heavy workflows. Declarative build scripts use Kotlin or Groovy DSLs, while the Tooling API supports integration with continuous integration systems and development environments. Gradle runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows and is available under the Apache License 2.0.

Dependency handling is a central strength. Gradle can declare and automatically resolve dependencies, work with Gradle Module Metadata, Maven POM, and Ivy metadata, and publish to Maven- and Ivy-compatible repositories. Dependency locking generates lock files for more controlled builds, while offline installation uses the local cache. Repository authentication and credential management support private registry workflows. Build and dependency caching can also reduce repeated work, and multi-project and composite builds provide structure for repositories with related projects or included builds.

The build model is strongest when a team needs control over dependencies, repository access, caching, publishing, and project relationships in one tool. Integrations with Android Studio, IntelliJ IDEA, Visual Studio Code, Eclipse, and NetBeans support common development environments. Gradle Build Tool remains free and open source, with no paid tier described for the build tool, making it suitable for teams seeking a self-managed build system rather than a subscription service. Teams looking for AI-assisted build features should consider an alternative, while teams with simple, single-project automation may find Gradle's scope unnecessary.
