Our verdict on Goose

Goose is an open-source performance testing framework written in Rust for developers and engineering teams testing web applications, APIs, and services. It generates HTTP and HTTPS workloads through an HTTP client, while simulated users follow workflows defined in Rust code. This makes Goose a strong fit for teams that want programmable load tests rather than a primarily visual test builder, especially when API behavior and application-specific user journeys need to be represented in code.

Its main strength is the depth of workload control. Test plans can combine concurrent-user targets, hatch rates, startup times, run times, ramps, ramp-downs, and load spikes. Goose also supports asynchronous simulated users, request and transaction logging, scenario and error reporting, debug output, HTTP response validation, and response-text checks. Coordinated-omission mitigation and response-time metrics add useful measurement detail for performance investigations. Telnet and WebSocket runtime controllers provide additional ways to manage active tests, while HTML, Markdown, JSON, and other report outputs support different reporting workflows.

The trade-off is a focused, self-hosted approach. Building a dedicated test application requires Rust development, and the deployment model suits teams comfortable managing their own testing environment. Goose supports load testing, stress testing, and API testing, but current releases do not provide distributed load execution; previously provided Gaggle execution was removed from Goose 0.17.0. Choose Goose if customizable Rust applications, complex workload behavior, validation, and report control matter most. Consider an alternative if your priority is distributed execution or a broader integration ecosystem rather than code-level flexibility.
