Our verdict on Google Web Toolkit

Google Web Toolkit is an open-source toolkit for building browser-based applications with client-side Java. Teams write application code in Java and compile it into JavaScript for web browsers. Its intended audience is Java teams that want to build browser applications while keeping Java at the center of client-side development. The SDK includes a command-line compiler, Java APIs, UI widgets and a development server, and is available for Windows, macOS and Linux.

GWT’s scope goes beyond basic source conversion. It includes JsInterop for JavaScript interoperability, GWT RPC and JSON communication, internationalization support, browser development and debugging modes, and JUnit-based testing. Compiler optimization and code splitting address how compiled applications are delivered. These features make GWT relevant to teams with Java skills and browser application needs; it is a narrower fit for projects whose developers want to write client-side code directly in another language or use a hosted application-building service.

The project is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license, with self-hosted deployment rather than a hosted commercial service. There are no paid tiers to compare: the published offering is an SDK, and support channels are community resources and documentation. That keeps the product’s cost model straightforward, but teams should account for managing their own development environment and relying on those support channels. GWT is worth considering for Java teams that value its compiler, interoperability and testing facilities; teams seeking hosted operations or a different client-side development approach should look elsewhere.
