Our verdict on Google Docs
Google Docs is a cloud-based word processor for individuals, organizations, and teams. It supports document creation and formatting through templates, building blocks, document tabs, and pageless layouts. Users can collaborate in real time, add comments and emoji reactions, assign tasks, apply suggested edits, and restore earlier versions. Documents are available through web, iOS, Android, and a Chrome extension, with offline creation and editing supported in compatible browser or mobile configurations.
Pricing follows a freemium model. A free plan provides access to Google Docs, while Google Workspace Business Starter costs $7 per user per month with annual billing and includes 30 GB pooled storage per user, business email, and collaboration tools. Business Standard costs $14 per user per month with annual billing, adds 2 TB pooled storage per user, and includes Gemini in Docs and other Workspace apps. Business Plus costs $22 per user per month with annual billing, includes 5 TB pooled storage per user, and adds eDiscovery and advanced management features. Enterprise offers custom pricing, with enterprise security and management controls. A 14-day free trial is also available.
Its strongest fit is a browser-centered workflow built around Google Drive, Gmail, Google Chat, Calendar, Sheets, and Meet, while support for Microsoft Word and PDF files helps with common document exchanges. Granular permissions cover viewing, commenting, editing, downloading, and sharing, giving teams practical control over collaborative work. Gemini-assisted drafting and refinement add an AI option for eligible plans. Choose Google Docs when shared editing, version history, offline access, and Google Workspace integration matter most. Consider an alternative if verified desktop applications are essential or if a Docs-only tool is preferred over a broader Workspace subscription.
