Google Cloud Managed Lustre is a fully managed, POSIX-compliant parallel file system for AI, machine learning, analytics, high-performance computing, and other workloads that need shared, high-throughput storage. It mounts from Compute Engine virtual machines and Google Kubernetes Engine clusters, supports multi-petabyte capacity, and runs in individual zones within supported Google Cloud regions. Its web, Linux, and API access makes it suited to teams already operating workloads on Google Cloud rather than general-purpose file-sharing users.

Pricing is organized around a Dynamic tier and four throughput tiers. Dynamic costs $0.06 per GiB per month and adds block-level caching for hot data. The 125 MB/s/TiB tier costs $0.145 per GiB per month for capacity-focused parallel storage. The 250 MB/s/TiB tier costs $0.21 per GiB per month for general-purpose HPC and throughput-intensive AI workloads, while the 500 MB/s/TiB tier costs $0.34 per GiB per month for higher-performance HPC and AI use. The 1,000 MB/s/TiB tier costs $0.60 per GiB per month for demanding high-throughput workloads. Pricing varies by location and performance tier.

The service fits environments that need POSIX behavior, selectable throughput, and direct integration with Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Storage, and Cloud Scheduler. Incremental import from and export to Cloud Storage support data movement workflows, while encryption at rest and in transit and user, group, and project file-system quotas address core administrative needs. The main trade-offs are its paid-only model, provisioned scaling, zonal deployment, and Lustre over TCP protocol. Choose Managed Lustre for Google Cloud AI and HPC workloads that need parallel storage performance; choose another storage approach for simpler file sharing or workloads that require a different deployment model.

Google Cloud Managed Lustre pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • POSIX parallel storage mounts to Compute Engine and GKE
    • Performance tiers reach 1,000 MB/s/TiB
    • Cloud Storage import and export support multi-petabyte workflows
  • Where it doesn't
    • No free plan; pricing is billed monthly per GiB
    • Instances are provisioned in individual zones
    • Scaling uses provisioned capacity and supports Lustre over TCP
