Our verdict on Google Cloud Datastream

Google Cloud Datastream is a serverless change data capture and replication service for moving historical data and ongoing inserts, updates, and deletes from databases and other sources into Google Cloud destinations. It is aimed at analytics, data integration, lakehouse synchronization, and database replication teams that need near-real-time delivery. Supported sources include MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, Spanner, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Workday, and other listed enterprise systems.

Its strongest fit is the Google Cloud ecosystem. Destinations include BigQuery, Cloud Storage, and Apache Iceberg, while Dataflow integration supports downstream replication and processing. Datastream also provides secure private connectivity options, cross-region support, data transformations, and schema drift resolution through a versioned schema registry. The Free Tier covers up to 100 GiB of CDC data per month for AlloyDB and Spanner sources streaming to BigQuery. Separate CDC and backfill tiers cover ongoing change processing and historical data backfill.

Datastream suits organizations already centered on Google Cloud analytics and teams that want managed infrastructure rather than a self-hosted replication stack. Serverless autoscaling can reduce infrastructure management for changing workloads, while backfill and CDC support cover both initial loading and continued synchronization. The narrower destination set matters: teams needing broad warehouse, SaaS, or operational database targets may prefer an alternative with a wider ecosystem. Its one-way replication model also makes it less suitable for bidirectional synchronization requirements.
