Our verdict on Google Cloud Certificate Manager

Google Cloud Certificate Manager manages TLS certificates for Google Cloud load balancers and related services. It supports Google-managed and self-managed certificates, hostname-based certificate maps, DNS-based and load-balancer-based domain authorization, automatic issuance and renewal, certificate discovery, and lifecycle management. Mutual TLS configurations, trust anchors, Public CA integration, and Certificate Authority Service integration extend its scope for Google Cloud users managing certificates across connected workloads and hybrid environments.

Pricing is usage-based, with a free tier covering 0 to 100 certificates at $0 per certificate per hour. The 100 to 2,000 certificates tier is priced at $0.000273973 per certificate per hour, while 2,000 certificates and above are priced at $0.000136986 per certificate per hour. TLS certificate deployment is priced at $0.45 per 1,000,000 certificates for deployed RSA-3072 and RSA-4096 certificates. mTLS connections are priced at $0.45 per 1,000,000 connections. These separate deployment and connection charges matter when estimating costs beyond certificate usage.

The product fits teams already operating with Google Cloud load balancers, Secure Web Proxy, Media CDN, Google Kubernetes Engine, Compute Engine, Cloud SQL, Cloud Service Mesh, or Certificate Authority Service. Administrators can manage certificates through the Google Cloud console, gcloud CLI, APIs, and Terraform-supported workflows. Certificate Manager 2nd gen adds certificate inventory and lifecycle automation for selected workloads, Google Cloud services, and hybrid environments, but it is documented as a Pre-GA offering. Choose it for Google Cloud-focused certificate automation and integrated mTLS; consider an alternative when certificate management must span ecosystems beyond its listed integrations.
