  • Where it wins

    • Supports Google Cloud, serverless, and external HTTP-capable origins
    • Optimizes images through resizing, cropping, compression, and format conversion
    • Adds signed access, edge processing, and near-real-time monitoring
  • Where it doesn't

    • Usage costs vary by destination, volume, cache fill, and requests
    • Configuration runs through Google Cloud load-balancing infrastructure
    • Origin shielding is associated with Media CDN rather than Cloud CDN

Our verdict on Google Cloud CDN

Google Cloud CDN caches HTTP(S) content at Google’s global edge network, helping reduce latency, origin load, and delivery costs. It is suited to teams serving web content, APIs, images, and video-related workloads from Cloud Storage, Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, App Engine, Cloud Run, serverless backends, or external HTTP-capable origins. Its usage-based model fits workloads that prefer variable billing over a fixed subscription, while its Google Cloud positioning makes it a natural choice for infrastructure already using Google services.

The Usage-based plan bills cache data transfer out according to destination and monthly usage. Cache fill is priced separately within the published per-GiB range, and HTTP/HTTPS cache lookup requests are charged per 10,000 requests. The published starting price is $0.02 per GiB, but the overall bill depends on traffic destination, monthly volume, cache fills, requests, and related Google Cloud charges. Buyers should therefore forecast traffic patterns and request volume rather than treat the starting rate as a complete delivery cost.

Platform fit is the central strength. Teams can configure cache keys, TTLs, cache policies, dynamic compression, signed URLs, and signed cookies, while Cloud Armor supports security controls and Cloud Logging and Cloud Monitoring provide near-real-time logs and metrics. Image resizing, cropping, compression, and format conversion run at the edge, and Service Extensions plugins support WebAssembly-based edge processing. Choose Cloud CDN when Google Cloud integration, external-origin support, and media optimization matter. Consider another option when origin shielding is a requirement or when a simpler, standalone CDN configuration is preferred.
