Our verdict on Google Cloud Capacity Planner
Google Cloud Capacity Planner is a cloud service for viewing current, historical, and forecasted usage across Google Cloud projects, folders, and organizations. It is designed for teams planning capacity for Compute Engine instances, Persistent Disk, Hyperdisk, GPUs, TPUs, and Cloud Storage bucket egress bandwidth. The console and REST API make it suitable for organizations that want a free way to review demand, quotas, reservations, and future capacity needs within Google Cloud.
Its strongest capability is the combination of usage forecasting and planning controls. Users can forecast future needs from historical usage patterns, inspect P50, P75, and P99 usage percentiles, view quota availability and resource reservations, and create future reservation requests. Automatic quota increase requests can reduce manual planning steps. Historical forecast snapshots can also be compared with actual usage, helping teams assess how forecasts align with observed demand. These features make it a focused option for short-term Google Cloud capacity planning rather than a broad, cross-platform capacity management suite.
Google Cloud Capacity Planner is free to use, while billable Google Cloud resources created or used with it are charged separately. Usage and forecast data can be exported to Google Cloud Storage or BigQuery, and capacity data is available through a REST API. The main trade-off is its narrow Google Cloud resource coverage and short-term planning horizon. It is a strong fit for organizations already managing the listed Google Cloud resources, but teams needing broader infrastructure coverage or longer-range planning should consider an alternative.
