Our verdict on go-boot

go-boot is an open-source TamaGo unikernel that provides a UEFI shell and operating-system loader for AMD64 platforms. It is aimed at developers and system builders who need programmable boot workflows rather than a conventional desktop multiboot interface. The shell includes commands for filesystem access, hardware inspection, networking, and system control. It can load EFI application images, Linux kernels configured through UAPI boot-loader entries, and the Windows UEFI boot manager. The project can also be installed as an EFI boot entry.

Its main strength is the depth of control available within a compact UEFI application. Default EFI and Linux loader entries, console output, and optional networking can be configured at build time. UEFI networking is available through the gVisor or lneto stacks, while execution under QEMU and deployment to Google Compute Engine extend the project beyond a physical machine’s firmware environment. These capabilities make go-boot relevant for custom appliances, development workflows, and specialized bare-metal environments where direct control matters.

The trade-off is that go-boot is source-built software, not a conventional desktop boot-manager package with a graphical configuration workflow. Users compile the EFI executable with the TamaGo compiler and define key behavior during the build process. Its scope is also focused on UEFI: BIOS booting is not supported, and the category positioning does not indicate broad, user-facing multiboot management. Choose go-boot when an EFI shell, programmable loader entries, and execution flexibility are priorities. Choose another boot manager if you need a ready-to-install desktop interface, BIOS compatibility, or a broader consumer-oriented multiboot workflow.
