Our verdict on GitComet

GitComet is an open-source desktop Git client for Linux, macOS, and Windows. It is aimed at developers and software teams working with local repositories, including large codebases. The application supports repository browsing, history inspection, branching, staging, commits, fetch, pull, push, diffs, interactive rebase, worktrees, submodules, stashes, and merge-conflict resolution. It runs locally without requiring a GitComet account, while remote operations use configured Git remotes.

Pricing is straightforward. The Open Source plan costs €0 forever and covers personal and commercial use, local repository work, remotes, staging, commits, branching, history, diffs, and two-way and three-way merge tools. Professional costs a one-time €20 and includes everything in Open Source, plus Claude Code, Codex, GitHub CLI, GitHub, and Azure DevOps integrations, code test coverage workflows, and priority improvements during early access. The Professional edition is described as a next or planned edition, with a waitlist, so its early-adopter price is not a recurring subscription.

GitComet’s strongest area is depth within a desktop Git workflow. It supports file-, hunk-, and line-level staging; squash and cherry-pick; linked worktrees; graphical or command-line difftool and mergetool use; a built-in file editor; and blame views. That makes it a fit for users who want detailed repository control without relying on a GitComet account. It is less suitable for teams seeking built-in AI functionality or a fully hosted workflow, since AI tools are listed as integrations rather than native features, and fetch, pull, and push depend on configured remotes. Choose GitComet for focused local Git work; consider another client if those hosted or native AI capabilities are central.
