Our verdict on GitBack

GitBack is an open-source, self-hosted system for automatically backing up Git repositories. It suits solo users and small or mid-market teams that want repository copies stored locally rather than relying on a hosted backup service. Its source coverage spans GitHub, GitHub Enterprise, GitLab, self-hosted GitLab, CNB.cool, and arbitrary Git repository URLs, making it relevant when repositories sit across more than one Git host.

Scheduling is handled through cron expressions, so backup timing can be customized rather than selected from a fixed interval list. GitBack runs in Docker, with Docker Compose deployment and local repository storage. An included CGit web interface lets users browse the backed-up repositories. Built-in interval and sliding-window rate limiting are intended to reduce pressure on source platforms. These features make the scope focused: GitBack preserves Git repositories, not the surrounding collaboration records such as issues or pull requests.

The self-hosted model is a good fit for people comfortable operating their own deployment and managing access tokens for hosted providers. Its published support channel is documentation, so teams seeking direct support or a managed service should consider alternatives. Choose GitBack when scheduled repository copies across multiple Git sources and local browsing are the priority; look elsewhere if the backup requirement includes issues, pull requests, or other project data beyond Git repositories.
